For many adults in West Islip, looking and feeling your best isn’t just about skincare or the latest beauty trends—it’s about confidence. Over time, sagging eyelids or under-eye bags can make you appear more tired or older than you feel. If you’ve been considering eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, one of the biggest questions on your mind is likely: How much downtime will I need?
Blepharoplasty is a cosmetic or functional procedure that removes excess skin, fat, and sometimes muscle from the upper and/or lower eyelids. As we age, the skin around the eyes can lose elasticity, leading to drooping upper eyelids or puffy under-eye bags that may affect vision or create a tired, aged appearance. Blepharoplasty can help restore a more youthful and refreshed look by tightening and reshaping the eyelids. In some cases, the procedure is performed for medical reasons, such as improving peripheral vision obstructed by sagging eyelid skin.
Blepharoplasty is a relatively straightforward procedure, but like any surgery, recovery takes time. The good news is that most people find the healing process manageable with some planning. Here’s what you can expect.
Immediately after surgery, your eyelids will likely be swollen and bruised. This is completely normal. You may also experience mild discomfort, tightness, or dry eyes. Ice packs and prescribed medications can help ease any initial swelling and soreness. It’s best to take it easy for the first 48 hours—no heavy lifting, no strenuous activity, and definitely no rubbing your eyes.
Most people feel comfortable returning to non-strenuous activities, including desk work, within a week. Stitches (if non-dissolvable ones were used) are usually removed around days five to seven, and by this time, swelling and bruising have typically subsided enough that you may feel ready to venture out in public. Some residual bruising can be covered with makeup after about a week.
By the second week, swelling continues to improve, and you should start seeing a more refreshed appearance. Most people are comfortable resuming social activities without noticeable signs of surgery by weeks two or three. However, strenuous exercise should still be avoided for about four weeks to prevent unnecessary strain on the healing tissues.
While you’ll likely feel back to normal within a few weeks, it can take a few months for all residual swelling to completely resolve and for your final results to fully settle. At this point, your eyelids should look naturally rejuvenated, and any scars will continue to fade.
If you have a big event coming up—like a wedding, vacation, or reunion—it’s best to plan your surgery at least six to eight weeks in advance to ensure you look and feel your best. Most patients find that taking a week off work is sufficient, but if your job is more physically demanding, you might want to allow for additional time.
