People are often intimidated by cataract surgery, but one of the easiest ways to ease your mind is to learn as much as you can about the procedure. If you aren’t sure where to begin, here are a few questions you should ask your eye doctor at the Eye Care and Optical in West Islip, New York, before getting cataract surgery.
There are two different kinds of cataract surgery: traditional and laser. The traditional method of cataract removal involves making a very tiny incision in the eye. While this method is still used, laser eye surgery is often the most common. In laser cataract surgery, there is no need to cut into the eye in order to remove the cataract. Instead, the laser corrects the shape of the eye.
As soon as the cataracts are removed, the lens is replaced with an IOL (intraocular lens). There are several different types of these IOLs available. For example, monofocal lenses are designed to restore vision at near or far distances. Multifocal lenses, however, are designed to offer clear vision at various distances. These tend to be best if both of your eyes undergo surgery.
There is no easy, straightforward answer to this, as it will vary from one person to the other based on the IOL chosen and their current prescription. For example, if you choose a monofocal lens, it is possible to still need corrective eyewear for close-up vision, including reading. However, if you choose a multifocal lens, there will be less of a chance of requiring corrective eyewear after the surgery. Our eye doctors can evaluate your individual needs and inform you of what you should expect.
