Traditionally, the most common means of treatment for most cases of glaucoma is the use of eye drops which lower intraocular pressure in order to reduce the likelihood of optic nerve damage.
This is changing as reports mount concerning the disadvantages and complications of chronic eye drop use including: cost, difficulty with proper use, compliance issues and some potentially serious complications such as dry eye.
Fortunately, there are now some much simpler treatments thanks to technologic advances such as Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT). This is a short, painless office-based procedure, which can often reduce or even dispense with the need for eye drops and might adequately lower eye pressure for years. Successful SLT can also eliminate the need to constantly remember to use and refill your eye drop prescriptions.
SLT can also consistently lower eye pressure in the treated eye(s) around the clock avoiding the “spikes and troughs” commonly seen when eye drops are used to control eye pressure.
The procedure can also be repeated as needed and is covered by insurance. In the long run you stand to save time and money while avoiding the hassle of daily eye drop use and its frequent attendant side effects.
