20/20 in 2020

According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, 20/20 vision is a term used to express normal visual acuity (the clarity or sharpness of vision) measured at a distance of 20 feet. A person with 20/20 vision can see clearly at 20 feet what should normally be seen at that distance. In contrast, 20/100 vision means that one must be as close as 20 feet to see what a person with normal vision can see at 100 feet. As 2020 approaches, there is no better year to prioritize vision health!

Eye health and vision care are often the most neglected aspects of overall health maintenance. Years sometimes pass between appointments. Old prescriptions, scratched lenses, and bent and ill-fitting frames are tolerated as are deteriorating contact lenses. Serious vision-threatening medical conditions can go unnoticed as well. Ironically, many of the same people ignoring their eye care needs have a health plan with vision benefits that go unused.

Many vision plans have a use-it-or-lose-it approach where a fixed dollar amount is allotted at the beginning of the year, and anything unused is lost on December 31 before resetting on January 1. With the new year comes a new opportunity to use your vision coverage.

Why not replace those old glasses or contacts in 2020? Stop using drug store cheaters and get a pair of prescription reading glasses. Lasik surgery may even be covered as well, for those considering it. Health Savings Accounts (HSA) benefits may even be used for accessories like saline solution, cleaning products, microfiber cloths, neck straps, etc.

The new year is here. Many are resolving to improve their health by losing weight or quitting smoking. Why not resolve to see things more clearly this year? After all, that should be the focus in 2020.
